Index of refraction

The index of refraction is the most important glass characteristic to calculate the focal length of ball lenses. The selection of various materials gives the designer a larger degree of choice when designing Fiber Optic systems. The index of refraction is also depending on the wavelength of light and is usually specified as Nd at 587.6 nm, situated in the middle of the visible light spectrum. For accurate calculations the slightly different index of refraction at the typical Fiber Optic wavelengths should be used.
